"Ish"

Max is starting to talk a little bit, so I thought I'd jot down a few things before I forget.  He still says "Mama" all the time (often at the top of his lungs, and sometimes with what sounds a bit like a Spanish accent).  I'd say the next most common word he says is "ish?" (like he's asking a question).  Ok, so "ish" isn't really a word, and I have no idea what he's intending to say.  Usually he says it as he's pointing at something as if to ask you to look at it or get it for him.  Maybe he's trying to say "this"?  Not sure.

Other words (or at least attempted words) include:

brrrrrr (when we go outside, even if it's not really cold)
mmmmm (said enthusiastically when he sees food or if you ask him if he's ready to eat)
ball ("bah")
bath ("baa")
balloon ("boon")
umbrella ("brella")
Dada
yeah
banana ("nana", not to be confused with "NahNah" aka Winnie)

He also likes to babble the same sound over and over, especially "babababababababa," to which Scarlett usually responds, "Why are you saying that Maxwell?  You are not a sheep!  You're a baby!"

Captain Heartbreak Strikes Again

Look at that face.  So sweet.

So innocent.

Ok, maybe not.

Captain Heartbreak looking a little heartbroken himself.

Our little cupcake, with sweet Nah Nah in the background.

Hey Captain Heartbreak, there's a balloon growing out of your head.

Here we go to the Perot

We recently checked out the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science.  In a word, it's amazing.  From the building to the exhibits and everything in between, it's world-class.  We figured at a minimum Scarlett and Max would be interested in the dinosaurs (which for the most part were found locally, or at least regionally), but there was actually quite a bit that interested them, so we'll be back for sure.

The outside of the museum (that crazy protrusion on the side of the building is an escalator).

Checking out a giant frog before heading inside.

Max takes in the scene in the Children's section, which includes a child-sized farmer's market, a simulated forest, and a climbable replica of the Dallas skyline among other things.

Now, off to the exhibit halls.  Dinosaurs!

And flying dinosaur turtles?  Who knew?  (Yeah, I get that he/she is swimming, but try explaining that to a headstrong three year old who sees the turtle with her own eyes and that turtle is FLYING.)

Max inspects a swirling light display that's supposed to be something, but I forget.  The ocean tides, maybe?  Let's just go with that.

Max saw this and yelled out "Nah Nah!", which is what he calls Winnie and other Winnie-like creatures.  We've thought long and hard about why he calls her this, and all we can come up with is that sometimes Scarlett calls her Winnie Banana, and maybe he latched on to the banana bit.  In any event, don't tell Winnie about the comparison.  I can't remember what in the heck this thing is, but Winnie would not be pleased, I'm sure.

Head to the museum when you get a chance -- you won't be disappointed!

Scarlett's Pink Princess Birthday Party (Part 2)

Finally, here's Part 2 of Scarlett's birthday party photos.  In my first post I forgot to include a picture of the cardboard castle that we had for the kids to color.

It's still in the playroom almost three weeks later looking like it's been under constant siege by a band of roving marauders (or to be more precise, under constant siege by Max).

And now, the party photos!

Aunt Brenda, Cousin Jordan, and Grandma.

BB and Max.  (Max is reminding everyone that,  "Yeah, yeah ... Scarlett's three years old now, but let's not forget who's ONE, people!")

The Princess and the Queen.

Casting a spell with her wand.  (She turned Max into a frog several times over the course of the day.)

Papa Tig and Max check out the balloons.  Balloons are almost as awesome as balls.

Much to the delight of the Birthday Princess, a "real" Princess came to the party (not to be confused with a "pretend" princess ... be warned, there are pretend faker princesses everywhere it seems).  Her name was Pink Princess.  (Seriously.  She pretty much politely refused to give us her real name.  A little strange, but we just rolled with it.)  The Pink Princess painted faces and made balloon animals and other balloon creations.  Here's Scarlett consulting with the Pink Princess to decide what she wants painted on her face.  The verdict:  "a star princess."  Since that was a little tricky, the Pink Princess drew a crown with a star on Scarlett's forehead so she she would look like a princess.  With a star on her forehead.  (Again, we just rolled with it.)

You may recall that I purchased mass quantities of blow up swords.  Here's Scot getting whacked in the head by his daughter Megan, while Max looks on approvingly.

A wide angle shot of the living room.  Note that Scot is still under attack, but his miniature attackers are multiplying.

Alysse loved her sword, and was too little to do much damage with it.  She had a firm grip on it almost the entire party.

"En garde!"  (Pay no attention to the fact that he's holding the wrong end of it; he's still clearly a force to reckoned with.)

Bouncing!

Just in case Cousin Jordan was feeling nervous while she got her face painted, Scarlett showed her Pinky.  Pinky can calm anyone's nerves.

Making crafts.

Inspired by crafting, Scarlett bedazzled baby Claire.

Getting ready to serenade the birthday girl, who was NOT pleased to have a roomful of people staring at her and singing.

There were even a few tears.  But guess what made up for it? ...

CAKE!

Katherine shows Scarlett her lady bug balloon bracelet.  When it was her turn, Scarlett asked the Pink Princess to make her a balloon carrot.  We managed to talk her into a balloon bunny.

Michael and Henry showing off their ferocious cheetah faces.

Max and Peggy catching up on the back patio as the party was winding down.  (Note that Max managed to snag one of those pink balloons he'd been admiring with Papa Tig.)

Opening presents after the party.

The little princesses and knights had a great time at the party.  It was exhausting for some of the adults, and there's still a fine layer of glitter over 60% of our house, but all in all, the Pink Princess Party was tons of fun.  We are looking forward to another great year with our smart, creative, and beautiful girl!

Scarlett's Pink Princess Birthday Party (Part 1)

Scarlett wanted a princess birthday party -- a PINK princess birthday party to be exact.  So from the invitations to the cake to the actual Pink Princess who came to the party, it was all pink and all princess all the way.  (Well, technically, it was a "princess and knight" party to make sure that any little guests not into princesses wouldn't think princess-loving was a requirement.)  This first post includes photos from before the madness party.

Scarlett's awesome pink castle cake.

I made this in a moment of Martha Stewart insanity inspiration (in my defense, it was super easy; I just cut a "3 out of a piece of cardboard and used a glue gun to cover it in crinkled cupcake wrappers).

View of the dining room ceiling with the pink tulle draping that BB helped me hang.

Tiaras, wands, and blow up swords (admittedly, swords were not my most brilliant move with a house full of kids five and under, but at least they weren't hard plastic).

Recycled butterfly tree form Alysse's baby shower last year.

The invitation.

The bounce house.

The dining room before the onslaught set up with crafts for the kids.

The cutest knight ever.  How perfect is that shirt?

And finally, the beautiful birthday princess herself.
