Folly Beach Part 2 -- crabs, a fort, a hurricane, a horror movie, Fourth of July, and more beach fun!

And the beach fun continues ... Riding the waves on the giant turtle.

Jumping in the waves with Daddy.

The "big kids" made this sand castle (it was quite the masterpiece).  Max may have helped a bit (and by helped, I men stuck a few seashells into the sand and poured a bucket of water or thirty into the moat).  I tried to get everyone to pose with their masterpiece, but as you can see, there was great concern that Max was about to attack the castle King Kong-style.

The moat was big and needed lots and lots of water.

One evening one of the guys from The Smoking Pot came to our house and made us a low-country boil, complete with crab, shrimp, potatoes, corn, and cobbler for dessert.  Everything was fresh (ie ALIVE) and right off the boat that day.

Inspecting the crabs.

Checking out the trailer filled with equipment (they brought absolutely everything from the pots to tables, chairs, and silverware).

Watching the World Cup with Daddy while dinner is cooking in the background.  I swear this was not intentional, but they are wearing nearly identical outfits (only difference is that Max's sear sucker shorts also had tiny red crabs on them; ok, so that part was intentional, but the matching with Chris was not).

Although intrigued by the crabs pre-boiling, Max was highly skeptical post-boiling.  But he still ate a few bites (drenched in butter), so I consider it a success.

Dinner time!

Post-dessert dessert (hey, we were on vacation).

"Camping" on the outdoor cushions in the laundry room.

Riding the ferry to Fort Sumter.  This is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on the Federal fort.  Fort Sumter surrendered a little over a day later, and Union forces tried for nearly four years to take it back.

A big cannon and a big hug.

I am constantly getting photos of these two striking the same pose, and they crack me up every time.  Two peas in a pod.

Heading back to the beach!

We had rain a couple of days while we were there (including some effects from Hurricane Arthur, which hit just north of us in North Carolina; we were so busy having fun and watching the World Cup instead of the news that I didn't even realize a hurricane was headed towards us until Papa Tig texted his concern from New Mexico).  On the rainiest day, we headed into Charleston to check out the aquarium.

Checking out the silly lemur (or silly kids getting checked out by a lemur, as the case may be).

Scarlett and the stingray exchange smiles.

That was the end of the smiles for a bit.  As you may recall from my first Folly Beach post, we decided to see a 4-D movie about prehistoric sea creatures.  A few minutes after this photo was taken, Scarlett, Max, Ruby, and 20 other kids fled in terror.  The kids still bring up the movie every now and then months later.

And -- surprise! -- more beach time.

Scarlett saw this teenage girl "surfing" and was duly impressed (I think she was technically wake boarding, but close enough).  So Scarlett took one of our boogie boards and decided to make a go of it.  She did this on her own, unprompted, which was pretty cute.

Giving some pointers to Max.

Since she was basically "surfing" in the sand, I thought I'd give her a little help.

Wipe out!

And another wipe out!

Fourth of July cuties.

Sparklers!

We had lots of other fireworks to set off as well, but it was so windy on the beach that we were having a hard time lighting our punks.  Chris ran back to the beach access area, which was protected from the wind, lit the punks, and then raced back Chariots of Fire-style.  It was a hilarious scene, and the photo doesn't do it justice.  You'll just have to trust me.

Before we headed back to Dallas, we drove up to Charlotte to spend the night with the Briggs family (Jennifer (aka Loberg), Brett, Makena, and Reese).  Scarlett loves playing with big girls, and these two were so sweet to her.

And one more shot with Max.
