November 17, 2013 -- "I'm TWO!"

Max is TWO!  He weighs 30 pounds, and I can't remember how tall he was at his recent appointment, but based on his height, Dr. Curry predicts that he'll be 6 ft. 1 in. when he's full grown (just like his Daddy).  His hair is getting darker, especially after his last haircut that trimmed off all of his summer blond.  He says too many words to list, and speaks in (mostly) complete sentences.  Some recent examples:

"Mommy, don't go upstairs ANYMORE!" (when I kept going up and down the stairs instead of sitting with him to watch a show)
"Don't go yet Mommy, hold hands!"  (when I try to sneak out of his room at night)
"Cats make me sneeze."  (after sneezing, with no cat in sight; his Daddy is successfully brainwashing him, but meanwhile Scarlett is on a "let's get a cat" campaign)

He loves to close things -- doors (in particular the bathroom door on Scarlett, leaving her sitting in the dark), cabinets, drawers, the dishwasher, gates, car doors, you name it.  And he is none too pleased if you do it before he has a chance to: "No, MAXWELL DO IT!"  We spend a lot of time these days re-opening said doors, gates, etc. so he can do it himself.  He then proudly announces his accomplishment:  "I DID IT!"  He loves to help in the kitchen pouring drinks (messy), putting waffles in the toaster (fire hazard), and stirring his chocolate milk (super messy), but good luck telling him no.  Speaking of food, he can be a picky eater, and he's not much of a carnivore.  He'd eat nothing but peanut butter sandwiches and fruit if we'd let him.  And he has a sweet tooth like you wouldn't believe.  Give that kid some chocolate, a lollipop, or a cupcake and you've got a friend for life.  He also loves to feed Winnie, and occasionally dumps her food and/or water all over the floor for fun.  His favorite show is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, but he also likes to watch Sofia the First (a Scarlett favorite as well) and I think we've watched the original Peter Pan animated movie five hundred times in the last few months.  He loves to go outside and hunt for rocks or make piles of leaves or seed pods from the big magnolia trees in the front yard.  Modes of transportation other than cars -- trains, planes, buses, bikes, "big trucks", tractors, construction equipment -- are fascinating to him and each and every one is pointed out with great excitement and must be acknowledged by everyone in his presence.  "Mommy, big truck!  BIG truck!  BIG TRUUUCK!!!"

Max is super affectionate and gives lots of hugs (especially sneak-up-from-behind hugs when you are crouched down on the ground or sitting on the floor) and kisses (I recently fell and he was quick to come and check on me -- "Mama ok?" -- and kiss my boo-boo).  He wants me to carry him all the time ("Mama, pick me up!"), which is sweet, but he's such a chunk ("Too heavy, Mama?").  But the absolute sweetest of all is his regular proclamations of love ... "Luff you, Mama" or "I love you, too" (even when you haven't already said I love you).

He and Scarlett love each other and play well together for the most part, but they can also drive each other crazy.  She pushes and pulls and wrestles with him (which he does not like), and he retaliates by messing with her things (which she really does not like).  Regardless, he always wants her around, and is eager to wake her up in the morning and always gives her a big hug and kiss before bedtime.  Whenever you ask him if he wants to do something or go somewhere, he confirms that we are all going as well before he agrees.  "Max, do you want to go to the park today?" is almost always answered with, "Scarlett, too?  Mommy, too?  Daddy, too?"

Here are some photos of our sweet, handsome, smart big boy on his second birthday.

Hugs from big sister.

Happy birthday, Maxwell!

Little Longhorn

Here are some shots of Max in his TX-OU game day getup.  The Longhorns got a surprise win against the Sooners.  Max could hardly believe it himself!

Cuteness.

"We're #1!"  (Ok, so technically we're not even in the top 25, but who's counting.)  Another possibility:  "Check out that squirrel over there!"

A Royal Halloween

Since I'm doing family Halloween costumes while I still have control over the situation, our theme this year was built around Scarlett's costume of choice.  Brace yourself, it's a shocker ... she wanted to be a princess.  (Now that I think about it, I had no control over Scarlett's costume choice, and Max refused to wear his.  So I guess I only have control over Chris and Winnie.  Better than nothing, I suppose.)  Anyhow, along with Scarlett's princess, I was a queen, Chris was a king, Max was (supposed to be) a dragon, and Winnie was a princess.

The Reluctant Dragon, the Pink Princess, and the Humiliated Wiener Dog.

The Dragon Random Kid in Green Sweatpants.  (Max looks surprised because I told him nobody was going to give him any candy unless he put on his dragon costume.  My threats didn't work.  And, as it turns out, he got more candy than Scarlett did, mostly because he'd just keep standing there at the candy bowl until people gave him some more.)

FYI, here's the rest of the neglected dragon costume.  (Max's response when I tried to put it on him:  "No dragon coat!  No dragon pants!"  Really, kid?  You don't even want to wear the pants?  I managed to at least get those on him eventually through candy bribery (not that the pants even remotely looked like any kind of costume ... *sigh*)).

The Royal Family.

Ready for trick or treating.

But first, the Pink Princess takes a bow.

Luke Skywalker (Boyd), Death Eater (?!) (Campbell), Little Witch (Blythe), Zombie (Harper), and the impatient Pink Princess

Let's get the show on the road, people ... the candy awaits!

Marie Antoinette post-beheading (Dana) and Day of the Dead Skeleton Lady (Molly) with a snake charmer on stilts.

Checking out a particularly decked-out house and getting up the courage to go up to the porch.

Happy Halloween!

Spirit Week, Fall 2013

It was Spirit Week a few weeks back at the kids' school.  They got to dress up in themed outfits.  Scarlett thought it was great fun, and sweet Max had no idea what in the world was going on.  Here they are in their spirited get-ups ...

Monday:  "Book Character Day"

Max is dressed as Max from the children's classic "Where the Wild Things Are."  (Well, "dressed like" him is a bit of a stretch ... he has a "Where the Wild Things Are" t-shirt on and a gold crown that stayed on his head for all of 30 seconds, but hey, we tried.)

Scarlett is dressed as Fancy Nancy from the series of books by the same name.  (Nancy adores all things fancy and dresses extravagantly, wearing boas, tutus, fairy wings, etc.)

Wednesday:  "Crazy Hair Day"

I bought (allegedly) washable color spray for their hair -- Scarlett of course wanted pink, and Max just went along with whatever we told him to do.  When I picked Scarlett up from school at the end of the day, her entire shirt was pink (and her nap mat, and her car seat).  Luckily, it came out of both her white shirt and her blond hair.  Max's color didn't really get on anything else, apparently because it was too busy permanently adhering to his hair and scalp.  The poor kid still has a green tint to his bangs and front hairline, especially in natural light.

Crazy look to go with crazy hair.

Poor Winnie inadvertently got in on the "crazy hair day" action with a patch of shaved fur and cone of shame following minor surgery the day before.

Friday:  "Pajama Day"

Self explanatory.  Do I get extra crazy-Mom points for changing the kids out of the pajamas they slept in that night into new pajamas for school?

(By the way, I have no idea why Max is holding a flashlight.)

Another day, another overzealous hug from Scarlett.  Note the bed-head to go with the pajama theme.  (Oh, and watch out, Max ... she may be after your flashlight.)

Dinosaur Museum

Here's a few shots from Mimi and Papa Tig's visit in August when we headed to the Perot Museum (known as "the Dinosaur Museum" around these parts).

Making "rock music" in garden (you drop rocks into a metal contraption that makes music sort of like a wind chime as they fall).

Little lady.

Trying to beat the heat in the river after our visit.
